How to transition livelihoods of those in LMICs now dependent on raising livestock commercially on a large scale away from livestock production to less environmentally harmful jobs?

Context and Relevance: The global livestock sector, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), faces significant challenges due to its environmental impact and the need for sustainable alternatives. This research aims to identify and promote agricultural practices that prioritize environmental health and sustainability, offering a viable replacement for large-scale livestock production. Understanding these practices' operational, economic, and environmental benefits will help guide future transitions and policy developments.

Potential Research Approach:

Sustainable Practices Identification: Identify alternative, sustainable agricultural practices that could serve as viable replacements for large-scale livestock production. This could include agroforestry, permaculture, regenerative farming, and other agroecological approaches that emphasize biodiversity, soil health, and ecosystem services.

Case Study Compilation and Analysis: Compile and analyze case studies of operators in LMICs who have successfully transitioned to sustainable agricultural practices, focusing on the operational model, economic viability, and environmental benefits. Investigate the key factors that have enabled the success of sustainable practices, including access to markets, financial and technical support, community engagement, policy frameworks, and education and training programs.

Support Mechanisms Exploration: Explore the types of support (e.g., financial incentives, technical assistance, policy reforms) needed to facilitate the transition for others in the livestock sector. This includes examining international models and frameworks that could be adapted to the context of LMICs.

Recommendations Development: Based on the findings, develop recommendations for advocacy organizations to lobby governments and international bodies for support in transitioning to sustainable, less environmentally harmful agricultural practices.

Additional Questions:

  1. What are the main barriers preventing the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices in LMICs, and how can they be overcome?

  2. How can local communities be engaged and empowered to support and participate in the transition to sustainable agricultural practices?

  3. What role can international organizations and partnerships play in facilitating the global shift towards sustainable agriculture in LMICs?
